Ciprofloxacin is used in the treatment of various bacterial infections such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, ear infections, urinary tract infections, genital tract infections, stomach infections, infections of bones and joints and skin and soft tissue infections. It can also be used in the management of patients with anthrax inhalation exposure.
Ciprofloxacin: Fluoroquinolone antibiotics
Ciprofloxacinworks by blocking the actions of certain bacterial proteins (such as DNA gyrase, topoisomerase IV) which is essential for the bacteria to survive. As a result, it destroys the susceptible bacteria and prevent their further growth and multiplication within the body which helps in reducing the severity of the infection.

The usual dosage of Ciprofloxacin is one tablet (250 mg) taken once a day with or without food. Some people can take more than one dose of Ciprofloxacin.
When taken with other medications, some people may experience notable interactions. One known risk factor for serious interactions with Ciprofloxacin is the use of antibiotics. People who have a history of cardiovascular disease, stroke or having a recent history of liver or kidney disease have been shown to have increased risk for interactions. This is the most recent study we have ever shown that we've ever seen showing an interaction with Ciprofloxacin.
If you miss a dose of Ciprofloxacin, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, wait until then and contact your doctor to skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a previously scheduled one.
A few side effects of Ciprofloxacin include:
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic with bactericidal properties that killsE. coliandK. pneumoniaein vitro. It was approved by the FDA for the treatment of pneumonia, bronchitis, and lower respiratory tract infections.
The antibiotic is commonly used in combination with other antibacterial agents to treat bacterial infections. The antibiotic has bactericidal properties, which means that it can kill bacteria without killing the entire host. The drug inhibits bacterial growth by killing the bacteria. The antibiotic is effective against anaerobic organisms, which means it can kill the entire host without killing bacteria. The antibiotic can be used in combination with other antibacterial agents to treat or prevent infections in patients with weakened immune systems.
This antibiotic belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics and works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. It kills the bacteria, allowing the immune system to kill the infection. The drug is commonly used in the treatment of pneumonia and other infections caused byP. aeruginosain both pregnant mares and female foals.
Ciprofloxacin is used to treat bacterial infections in dogs, including respiratory, urinary tract, and respiratory/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is also used to treat skin and soft tissue infections.
Ciprofloxacin may also be used for purposes other than those listed here. In general, do not use this drug to treat bacterial infections unless they are accompanied by other signs of infection. See the drug’s indications below for specific uses of this medication.
Dogs may be treated with oral or subcutaneous (surgical) intravenous (IV) ciprofloxacin, given as a single oral dose or divided into 2 or 4 times daily. Ciprofloxacin is not a full-body antibiotic. Dogs receiving oral or IV ciprofloxacin should have their joints examined regularly during treatment to determine the cause of the infection.
The usual dose of ciprofloxacin is 1 to 2 x 400 mg dose. The dosage for dogs can be adjusted as needed, usually once daily.
For the treatment of respiratory infections, the dosage of the drug should be titrated to the dog’s severity of illness. Titration allows for the dog to be observed by monitoring respiratory symptoms and signs.
Dogs that are pregnant or may be pregnant should not handle crushed, broken, or powder ciprofloxacin tablets. The animal should also be observed for signs of fetal harm (such as vomiting, heart failure, low blood pressure).
Ciprofloxacin should not be given to dogs that are lactating or nursing. Ciprofloxacin is excreted in the urine and can pass through breast milk. Ingestion of ciprofloxacin should be kept out of reach of the pet.
Ciprofloxacin should be given with or without food in a controlled environment for at least 2 weeks. If the dog is unable to swallow the tablets, he should be given a full break. The drug should be given with food to reduce the number of tablets swallowed. Dogs should not give their urine sample for 2 weeks after the drug has been given.
Ciprofloxacin is given orally in the form of a suspension. The suspension should be mixed with water to form a homogeneous suspension. If the dog cannot swallow the suspension, he should lie down with his legs bent down and the animal positioned on a flat surface. Do not open the bottle, and use a new one when the dog is not responding.
Ciprofloxacin is usually given by intramuscular injection. Ciprofloxacin is usually given in the dose and schedule. The dosage for dogs may be adjusted depending on the severity of the infection. The oral dose of ciprofloxacin for dogs is 5 mg/kg divided into 2 to 4 equal doses. The dosage for cats may be increased by 2 to 4 mg/kg/day.
The treatment of a dog may be given by injection.
Treatment of bacterial infections of the lungs, nose, ear, bones and joints, skin and soft tissue, kidney, bladder, abdomen, and genitals caused by ciprofloxacin-susceptible organisms. Infections may include urinary tract infection, prostatitis, lower respiratory tract infection, otitis media (middle ear infection), sinusitis, skin, bone and joint infections, infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever, and gonorrhea.
May be taken with or without food. May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
